Gurgaon experienced poor air quality for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 292. This figure falls within the "poor" category, which spans AQI values between 201 and 300.
The city’s air quality had also been in the "poor" category on the preceding days. On Tuesday, the AQI was 264, while on Monday, it stood at 278. This sustained period of poor air quality follows a recent improvement after the lifting of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
GRAP had been implemented in Gurugram for nearly 60 days to combat severe air pollution and was eventually lifted on February 27. Officials from the Gurugram administration noted that the recent improvement in air quality from "very poor" to "moderate" and "poor" was primarily due to increased wind speeds. Wind speeds had risen to 12-15kmph, up from 5-7kmph previously, which helped in the dispersion of pollutants.
However, despite this improvement from more severe categories, the AQI remains a concern. Experts indicate that factors such as vehicular emissions, construction dust, and stubble burning contribute significantly to air pollution in the region.
