This man was offered jobs from top companies such as Air India and more but he rejected those offers and built a Rs 5,86,000 crore company. Know his story here.

Narayana Murthy is one of the names that bring forth great respect in people’s hearts. Narayana Murthy’s achievements and his principles are admired by millions of people. He is one of the sharpest people when it comes to management.

Today we all know NR Narayana Murthy as the founder of IT giant Infosys and a billionaire businessman. But very few know that when Murthy was just putting his first steps into the corporate world after completing his master’s from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, Murthy was faced with a huge dilemma.

He was offered jobs from renowned and well-established companies such as Air India, TELCO, TISCO, etc. But Narayana Murthy decided to join the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad as a chief system programmer.

At the time it was a very difficult decision for him as Narayana Murthy was letting go of some of the most lucrative jobs at the time. Many of you may wonder, why Narayana Murthy decided to give up on such promising jobs and take up the work of a chief system programmer at IIM-A.

Well, Narayan Murthy revealed in an interview in 2019 that he had decided to join IIM-A as it was planning to install the first time-sharing system in India.

“So I was the only person from my batch of 16 students to have taken half the salary in quest of learning about a modern operating system, about the opportunity to interact with very bright students, about the opportunity to create lots of interactive lessons using computers for students in accounting, in simulation, in finance, in production, etc. So therefore I chose that path and that’s probably the best decision I made in my life,” Murthy said.

Although Murthy started with a job that paid him ‘half the salary’ today his net worth is Rs 39,898 crore. Narayana Murthy along with six software professionals launched Infosys in 1981 with an initial investment of just Rs 10,000. Infosys’s current market cap is Rs 5,86,000 crore.

Narayana Murthy is married to Sudha Murty, a renowned educator and author. They are parents to two children. Their daughter Akshata Murty is married to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
