Stunning footage shows China’s Shenzhou-18 mission launch from the air

China successfully launched the Shenzhou-18 spacecraft from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, located on the fringes of the Gobi Desert in northwestern China.

The launch occurred at 8:59 p.m. local time (1259 GMT) on Thursday, marking another milestone in China’s extensive space exploration program.

The mission’s primary objective was to transport a three-member crew to the Tiangong space station, where they would replace the current occupants from the Shenzhou-17 mission.

The send-off for the astronauts was a patriotic affair, filled with flag-waving children and nationalistic music, reflecting the country’s pride in its space achievements. The Shenzhou-18 crew includes Commander Ye Guangfu, a seasoned astronaut from the Shenzhou-13 mission, alongside newcomers Li Cong and Li Guangsu, both former fighter pilots. Their journey to the space station was expected to take approximately six-and-a-half hours post-launch.

China’s drive to establish its own orbital platform came after being barred from participating in the International Space Station project, primarily due to U.S. concerns over potential military involvements. In response, China has not only constructed its own station but also planned an ambitious schedule for it, including multiple manned and cargo missions this year.

During their six-month tenure aboard Tiangong, the Shenzhou-18 team will engage in various scientific endeavors. These include conducting experiments, installing new equipment to shield the station from space debris, and promoting science education. Lin Xiqiang, the deputy director of the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), highlighted these activities during a recent press conference.

Moreover, Lin revealed plans to expand international cooperation by potentially welcoming foreign astronauts and space tourists to the Chinese station. This move could pave the way for greater global collaboration in future space explorations.

Looking ahead, China’s space agenda is packed with ambitious projects. By 2030, the nation aims to retrieve samples from Mars and execute three additional lunar probe missions. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to position China as a leading power in space exploration, with the ultimate goal of placing Chinese astronauts on the moon within this decade.
