Azerbaijan is significantly expanding its air travel connectivity through increased flight frequencies and new routes offered by both national carrier Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) and various international airlines. This strategic expansion aims to bolster the country’s tourism potential and enhance its position as a global travel destination. The intensified flight schedule involves key hubs in Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, and other countries, providing greater access to Azerbaijani cities like Baku, Ganja, Lankaran, and Nakhchivan.
### Azerbaijan Airlines Expands International Routes
Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) is undertaking a substantial increase in its flight operations from Baku to several Turkish cities. Flights from Baku to Istanbul, which were previously 14 times a week, are set to increase to 17 times a week in April and further to 21 times a week in May. Similarly, the Baku-Ankara route will see an increase from 2 to 4 times a week in April, and Baku-Antalya flights will go from 3 to 5 times a week in April, reaching 7 times a week in May. Beyond Baku, AZAL is also expanding its regional connectivity, with Ganja-Istanbul flights increasing from 2 to 3 times a week in April. For Russian destinations, AZAL will double its Lankaran-Moscow (Vnukovo) flights from once to twice a week starting in June.
### Growing International Connectivity and Airline Partnerships
The expansion of air travel to Azerbaijan is not limited to AZAL. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus Airlines are also significantly increasing their operations to Azerbaijan. Turkish Airlines is increasing its weekly flights to Azerbaijan from 56 to 62, while Pegasus Airlines is raising its weekly flights from 35 to 40. New routes are also being established; FlyArystan from Kazakhstan now operates three flights a week to Baku, and Israir Airlines from Israel launched two weekly flights to Baku in the first quarter of 2024. Wizz Air from Hungary has also increased its flight frequencies to Baku.
Azerbaijan’s connectivity with Russia is notably robust and expanding. In 2023, the total number of weekly flights from Russia to Azerbaijan reached 77. Direct flights now connect up to 20 cities in Russia to Azerbaijan, up from 17. Several Russian airlines are active on these routes, including Aeroflot (up to 3 times a day from Moscow to Baku), Rossiya Airlines (Moscow, Sochi), Utair (Moscow), Azimut (Mineralnye Vody, Sochi, Ufa), Red Wings (Moscow, Kazan, Yekaterinburg), IrAero (Moscow, Samara), Nordwind (St. Petersburg), and S7 Airlines (2 flights a week from Novosibirsk). New routes include a weekly flight from Makhachkala to Baku and another from Ganja to St. Petersburg. Beyond Russia, other international carriers like Urumqi Air (Urumqi), Salam Air (Muscat), Arkia (Tel Aviv), IndiGo (Delhi), Flynas (Riyadh), SCAT (Aktau, Atyrau), Uzbekistan Airways (Tashkent), Air Arabia (Sharjah), FlyDubai (Dubai), and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi) also operate or are planning to operate flights to Azerbaijan, further diversifying the country’s air links.
### Significant Boost to Azerbaijan’s Tourism Sector
This widespread expansion in air travel is directly contributing to a surge in Azerbaijan’s tourism sector. According to the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, the country welcomed 978,000 foreign citizens in 2023, marking a 25.8 percent increase compared to the previous year. This figure represents 68 percent of pre-pandemic tourist levels. The positive trend continued into the first quarter of 2024, with a 16 percent increase in foreign tourists compared to the same period in 2023. The overall number of flights to Azerbaijan in 2023 also saw a significant rise, increasing by 31 percent compared to 2022. These developments underscore Azerbaijan’s commitment to enhancing its tourism infrastructure and attracting a broader international audience.
