Capital A Bhd., the operator of AirAsia, is actively exploring Bahrain as a potential Middle East hub for its airline business. This strategic move aims to expand the company’s presence in the region and leverage Bahrain’s geographical position as a gateway to key markets including Europe, Africa, and potentially North Asia.
Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, engaged in discussions with Bahraini officials, including Mohammed bin Thamer Al Kaabi, the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, and Khalid Humaidan, chief executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB). These meetings centered on potential partnerships that encompass establishing a regional hub, logistics services, and Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. Capital A also expressed interest in extending its digital business ventures, such as FinTech, logistics, and food delivery platforms, into Bahrain.
Bahrain is considered a favorable location due to its strategic position, an open skies policy, and well-developed infrastructure, including its international airport and the Khalifa Bin Salman Port. This exploration aligns with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify its economy and enhance its global connectivity. The EDB emphasized Bahrain’s competitive advantages and the potential for a long-term partnership with Capital A.
Through this proposed collaboration, Capital A intends to connect passengers from Bahrain to its existing network across Southeast Asia, with ambitions for future expansion into European, African, and North Asian destinations. This initiative reinforces Capital A’s goal of becoming a prominent global low-cost carrier.
