AirAsia is actively planning to establish a new Middle East hub in Bahrain as part of its global expansion strategy. This initiative, spearheaded by Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia’s parent company Capital A, aims to connect the Middle East with Europe, Africa, and Asia, leveraging Bahrain’s strategic geographical location.
Fernandes recently visited Bahrain to discuss these plans with officials from the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB). The EDB confirmed its partnership with AirAsia, stating that establishing a regional hub supports Bahrain’s economic vision by strengthening its tourism, logistics, and aviation sectors. AirAsia sees Bahrain as a pivotal base for expanding its network beyond its traditional Asia-Pacific routes.
Routes to Bahrain are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, with the hub establishment anticipated over the next few months. This move aligns with Capital A’s ambition to transform into a low-cost network carrier, mirroring the successful models of European budget airlines. The strategy focuses on providing value-for-money travel options and capitalizing on increasing travel demand between Asia and the Middle East. AirAsia has also indicated a potential partnership with Gulf Air as part of its expansion efforts.
