JFK Terminal 8 has transitioned to become a hub for American Airlines, British Airways, and other oneworld airlines. With two major investment and upgrade programs, it is an impressive facility.
American Airlines and British Airways at Terminal 8
The past few years have seen some major changes for key oneworld services at New York JFK Airport. From the end of 2022, American Airlines and British Airways have operated together from Terminal 8 (British Airways used Terminal 7 before – pictured below). As part of this move, the two airlines invested $400 million in a major terminal upgrade program.

These are not the only two airlines operating from Terminal 8 – but they do dominate. Most other oneworld airlines are conveniently operating from the terminal (including Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, and Royal Jordanian). Other major airlines at Terminal 8 include China Southern Airlines.
New lounge spaces and airline facilities
The main part of the recent $400 million renovation focussed on new airline facilities. There are new lounge spaces and check-in areas for both airlines. Less immediately visible, there are five new widebody gates, four new widebody parking positions, and an enhanced and expanded baggage handling system.

There are now four oneworld lounges in Terminal 8. The main American Airlines Admirals Club has been extensively refurbished. In addition, there are three new joint British Airways and American Airlines spaces – smartly named the Greenwich, Chelsea, and Soho lounges.
The large Greenwich lounge is the main business class (and oneworld Sapphire status members) – also used by other alliance members. This is a large space with several different seating, working, and buffet dining areas. Unusual additions include a tap-room bar serving beers from Brooklyn Brewery, and a large cocktail bar.
A Look At The Newly Renovated JFK Terminal 8
Passengers will transit through the new Terminal 8 on Thursday, December 1.
The Soho lounge is the equivalent general lounge for first class passengers and oneworld Emerald status members. This offers a la carte dining, individual work pods, and a rest area. There are also great apron views here from large floor-to-ceiling windows.

The Chelsea lounge is something different. Similar in concept to the Concorde Lounge in Heathrow Terminal 5, this is for British Airways and American Airlines ticketed first class passengers or the highest elite members (access is offered to British Airways Executive Club Gold members after earning 5000 Tier Points). This is a luxurious space, offering a champagne bar, a fireside lounge, and a la carte dining area.

Terminal 8 facilities
Terminal 8 offers the usual facilities you will find in all terminals – including WiFi, currency exchange, medical facilities, and pet areas. There are extensive shopping facilities, as you would expect. High-end retail options include Bulgari, Hugo Boss, Michael Kors, Solstice, and Tag Heuer. There are also at least two Hudsons stores and several duty-free outlets.

For restaurants and cafes, choices include SoHo Bistro, Bobby Van’s Grill, New York Deli, and O’Neals Restaurant. There is also a Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and a Mezze Cafe.
More improvements are on the way
Following on from the major $400 million refit joint with British Airways, American Airlines has recently announced further upgrades to the terminal. A two-year program (started in mid-2023) will see $125 million invested into dining and shopping improvements in the terminal. This will feature a new Great Hall and bring more than 60 new shopping and restaurant offerings.
