Oneworld carrier American Airlines has announced its 228th domestic destination. The airline will begin service to Provo, Utah, later this year. It will be American Airlines’s third destination in the state when flights start on October 7th.
Three times the charm.
Provo, which is situated an hour south of Salt Lake City and home to Brigham Young University, has been rapidly increasing its commercial service over the past few years since it opened a new passenger terminal. The latest addition is American Airlines, which has revealed that it will serve Provo Airport (PVU) from two of its southern hubs this autumn.
American Airlines will operate three nonstop flights to Provo beginning on October 7th, 2024. Two of the flights will be from American’s hub at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), and the third daily flight will be to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. (PHX). Joe Sottile, American Airlines’ Director of Domestic Network Planning, highlighted the connectivity options in a statement shared with Simple Flying:
“We are thrilled to offer service to Provo for the first time starting this fall.
“This new year-round service will offer convenient connections to destinations across the United States and the world on our comprehensive global network, giving local residents more ways to visit the places they want to visit most.”

The links will enable Utah residents to connect to over 30 destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America, in addition to American’s substantial domestic network. Tickets for both new routes go on sale on Monday, April 22nd.
Convenient worldwide connections
All three flights will be operated by a Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft with room for 65 passengers, including nine in first class. The flights are timed to enable passengers to connect to destinations across the airline’s network, further expanding travel options for area residents. From Dallas/Fort Worth, there will be morning and evening flights, allowing passengers to take a day trip to the Texas city. The proposed schedule is as follows:

The services will be a welcome addition to the route network from Provo and improve onward connectivity, saving travelers the trek to Salt Lake City (SLC) to access major domestic and international destinations. Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi noted just how essential these new services are:
“We had a forward-looking vision when we built the Provo Airport. The monumental announcement of the arrival of American Airlines proves we were on their radar as much as our airport tower will soon be on theirs.
“With year-round, daily service, American Airlines is showing their commitment to Provo and we couldn’t be happier to welcome them home with this game-changing service.”

Provo will be American’s third destination in Utah after Salt Lake City and St. George (SGU). The carrier resumed its seasonal service between DFW and St. George earlier this month.
A boost for Provo
American Airlines will become the third airline to serve the Utah city with scheduled commercial services. The airport has undergone a significant redevelopment in recent years and opened a new terminal in 2022. Brian Torgersen, Director of Provo Airport, noted how significant the new American Airlines service is to the community:
“Network service by a major carrier has been a focus of our air service development efforts at the Provo Airport even before the opening of our new terminal.
“We have been telling our story to all who would listen, and American Airlines has stepped up to provide exceptional service to two exceptional major hub airports! We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome American Airlines and the entire world to Provo!”

Allegiant Air opened a base in Provo in 2022 with four aircraft and now serves ten destinations from the airport. Notably, the carrier’s busiest route from Provo in October is to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (AZA). Allegiant also serves Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) with a twice-weekly Airbus A320 service.
Allegiant Air To Base 4 Planes At Provo From November
Allegiant Air is establishing a four plane base in Provo, Utah, in November, creating around 160 new jobs and pouring millions into the city.
Breeze Airways is the other incumbent at Provo. The carrier recently announced it will begin flights to Dallas/Forth Worth from Provo in June.
