Fort Worth-based American Airlines is banking on travelers fleeing the cold weather for sunny destinations by increasing flights to six destinations out of DFW International Airport this winter, among other additions to the carrier’s schedule.
Starting Nov. 5, American will fly twice daily out of DFW to Oaxaca, Mexico. Beginning Dec. 5 at DFW, American will add two weekly flights to Comayagua, Honduras, as well as daily flights to Nassau, Bahamas; Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands; and Huatulco and Zihuatanejo, both in Mexico. American is flying 11% more departures and 10% more seats this winter compared to last year.
The airline is also flying 16% more seats from DFW to Mexican, Caribbean and Latin American destinations.
“Customers will have more reasons to choose American than ever before for nonstop fun in the sun this year,” said Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of network and schedule planning in a statement. “We are excited to continue growing our network to the region with more flights this winter to the Caribbean and Latin America than any other U.S. carrier ever.”
The announcement also comes alongside other additions, including seven new routes and new service to La Romana, Dominican Republic from Miami. DFW Airport will fly to 46 Mexican, Caribbean and Latin American destinations this winter.
American will face its first major travel hurdle this year when summer begins, as the Transportation Security Administration is expecting its busiest summer ever from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Between aircraft delivery delays, union pressures and large crowds at airports across the country, major U.S. airlines have their work cut out for them.
From May 17 to Sept. 3, American is expecting over 72 million summer travelers.
“DFW and North Texas, travelers that should have confidence flying through DFW [Airport],” chief operating officer David Seymour said in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. “… It’s our largest operation and provides so much connectivity for our customers to be able to connect and go in just about anywhere they want.”
