Summary
- American Airlines and Delta Air Lines cutting California routes raises concerns about passenger options and competition in the region.
- Routes between Los Angeles and San Jose, as well as Los Angeles and Oakland, will be significantly reduced.
- Alaska Airlines and Southwest Airlines will potentially benefit from American and Delta’s exit.
American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are ending certain regional routes that ferry passengers within the state of California. These routes are being cut to move resources to more profitable routes.
The competition among airlines in California is fierce, and no airline stands above the rest. These airlines removing these flights from the market will result in lower competition, which can adversely affect passengers in the area.
American Airlines
As reported by Simple Flying, American Airlines announced in December 2023 that it would cancel service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC).

The route was contracted out by American Airlines to SkyWest Airlines, which utilized the Embraer E175, which has a capacity of 76 seats. The twice-daily flight will cease on April 3, 2024.
The number of flights offered between March and April will be reduced from 62 to just five. In addition, the amount of seats available will go down from 4,712 to 380. According to Cirium’s forecasts, the Available Seat Miles (ASM) will reduce by 1,334,256.
Alaska Airlines will pick up the slack left by American exiting the market. Alaska is a member of the oneworld alliance, as is American, which would allow the two airlines to codeshare and allow passengers to utilize the latter’s long-haul network.

Delta Air Lines
Delta Air Lines is one of the world’s largest carriers and calls itself the number-one carrier at LAX. It has invested heavily in the airport, renovating and improving Terminal 3. However, it’s now joining some competitors in cutting routes from the hub.

The airline is cutting the LAX to Oakland International Airport (OAK), which the airline has operated since 2007, on May 7, 2024, after 17 years. The airline currently offers 88 flights a month and over 6,500 seats.
The number of flights will be reduced to just 33 flights and 2,310 seats in May. The legacy carrier exiting the market will give Southwest Airlines a monopoly over the route. This does not bode well for passengers, as competition keeps fares low.
