A windshield cracked during an American Airlines flight from New York to Spain, causing the plane to divert to Boston Logan International Airport on Wednesday.
According to American, Flight 94 from John F. Kennedy International Airport was heading to Madrid–Barajas Airport but had a maintenance issue, causing the diversion. The aircraft landed safely and was taken out of service. The flight departed New York around 7:30 p.m. and at approximately 9:45 p.m. Eastern an alert was issued due to a windshield issue, Massachusetts State Police said, according to NBC Boston.
“We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience this has caused,” said Derek Walls, spokesman for American Airlines.
Passengers were given hotel accommodations and will leave on a replacement aircraft, according to American.
“When it happened, it was kind of shocking,” Nico Moreno, a passenger on the flight, said to NBC Boston. “No one could believe it and then when we return, we land and they say, ‘OK, guys you have to spend the night in Boston.’ And I think everyone, not freaked out, but we got mad.”
Passengers were aboard a Boeing 777-200 twinjet when the incident occurred. Aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing has been under fire after an Alaska Airlines plane, specifically a Boeing 737 Max 9, suffered a blowout on Jan. 5 that left a gaping hole in the side of the fuselage, an incident in which the Federal Aviation Administration opened a formal investigation of Boeing Co.
