American Airlines is launching its first nonstop flight to Tokyo from this major U.S. city:
NYC To Tokyo
It will now be easier than ever before for New Yorkers to escape to Tokyo.
Starting on June 28, American Airlines will be the only U.S. airline to provide a nonstop service between New York’s JFK airport and Tokyo’s Haneda airport.
This flight is a marathon not a sprint, with a flight time of 14 hours and 35 minutes. American Airlines will be using a Boeing 777-200 for the route.
The flight times available are incredibly convenient too. Passengers will depart from New York JFK at 11.25am and then land in Tokyo at 2.30pm the next day.
For the return leg of your journey you will leave Tokyo Haneda at 4.30pm and land in JFK at 4.35pm on the same day.
Tickets for this new route went on sale on 26 Feb.
There are 2 international airports in Tokyo: Tokyo Haneda and Tokyo Narita.
While both have their benefits, Haneda is considered the more convenient of the 2 because it is much closer to Tokyo’s city center. You can take a train ride from Haneda Airport to Tokyo Station (the city’s main rail hub) in just 30 minutes.

Top Tips For Visiting Tokyo
- English isn’t spoken extensively in the city so consider learning a few words of conversational Japanese before you fly. You should also download a translation app to your phone which will translate signs and menus for you, and can also come in handy if you get lost.
- If you need assistance then head to the nearest koban. These are small police stations on local street corners and you’ll see them everywhere. Crime levels are incredibly low in Tokyo but you can report crimes here. You can also report any lost items or even just ask for directions.
- Buy a Pasmo or Suica card to pay for your journeys as you navigate Tokyo’s public transport system. This might seem like a small trip, but it really will save you a fortune particularly over longer stays.
- If you walk past a store or restaurant with a long queue then don’t be deterred: join the line! Japanese people are known for their perseverance and are happy to wait in line for a good thing. The longer the queue, the better the food will be when you get to the front.
