Summary
- American Airlines inaugurated a new non-stop flight route between Miami and Governor’s Harbor in the Bahamas.
- Governor’s Harbor is a remote and picturesque destination known for luxury resorts and pink sands.
- The Bahamas is actively seeking to expand airlift and attract more tourists through partnerships with airlines like American Airlines.
On February 3, around the same time as its announcement of its longest route yet, the largest airline in the world, American Airlines, inaugurated a new route to the Bahamas. The flight between Miami and Governor’s Harbor, Eleuthera, will be nonstop and will take place two times a week. The flights will take place on Tuesdays and Saturdays all year round.
A Note on Eleuthera and the American Airlines connection
Eleuthera, a part of the great Bahama Bank, either refers to a single island in the archipelagic state of The Bahamas or to the cornucopia of smaller islands. Eleuthera’s remoteness, paradisiacal luxury resorts, pink sands, and environmental education hub in the Leon Levy Native Plant Reserve are all magnetic charms for tourists.
Its largest settlement – Governor’s Harbour – is also its administrative capital and is situated in the middle of the 110-mile island. Three airports serve this island, viz. North Eleuthera Airport, Governor’s Harbour Airport, and Rock Sound International Airport. American Airlines already operates daily flights between Miami and North Eleuthera Airport two times a day.
There were infrastructural changes to the Governor’s Harbour Airport recently as it saw expansions and upgrades to the departures and arrivals facilities. In addition, there were pronounced improvements to the fire station.

José María Giraldo, American Airlines managing director of operations for Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America, stated his elation at being a major force in the Bahamas region, as he expressed:
“We are excited to celebrate the launch of our sixth destination in The Bahamas, Governor’s Harbour, further strengthening our commitment to this unspoiled paradise. This new route marks our next step as we continue to expand American’s presence in the Caribbean and Atlantic, where we are proud to lead as the largest U.S. airline.”
The Bahamas is delighted with the prospect of more tourists
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, Hon. I. Chester Cooper, was buoyed by the launching of the new route to the Bahamas as he said:
“We continue to offer a diverse authentic experience to travelers, in partnership with our industry partners and airlines such as American Airlines. We look forward to fostering continued partnerships and providing a uniquely memorable Bahamas experience to travelers with this new American Airlines route.”
He further explained his desire to extend services to other destinations:
“This new airlift, just one month into 2024, underscores a holistic approach and unwavering commitment of the Ministry to aggressively expand airlift into our 16 island destinations,”
The operation of American Airlines in Governors Harbour will be adding to an already vibrant tourism culture in the Bahamas. Recently, the Dubai-based Emirates signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bahamas to promote tourism in the area.

Other airlines, such as the British carrier Virgin Atlantic, the Bahamian carrier Western Air, and Alaska Airlines, have set their sights on landing tourists on this famed island of sun, sea, and sand. To accommodate a higher number of tourists, the Bahamas is also looking to build an international airport in Grand Bahama.
Alaska Airlines’ New Bahamas Route Will Be Its Longest Yet
It is the carrier’s longest non-stop route in at least 20 years.
