American Airlines is mourning the loss of its most senior flight attendant. Bette Nash, who worked at the Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier for over 65 years died on May 17th.
Nash caught the attention of the globe as she obtained the world record for the longest-serving flight attendant. Thanks to her long tenure, she had the privilege to choose any route she wanted to work, which was mainly short hops in the Northeast.
Nearly seven decades of service
American’s Senior Vice President of Inflight & Premium Guest Services, Brady Byrnes, and Bobbi Wells, the carrier’s VP of Inflight confirmed Nash’s death in an internal memo obtained by JonNYC on Saturday.
“It is with sadness that we inform you of the passing of our dear colleague, Bette Nash, the longest-tenured flight attendant at American Airlines. She had been flying for nearly 67 years.”
Nash began her aviation career in 1957 in Washington DC, working for Eastern Airlines. After a string of mergers throughout the years, she ended up at American in the late 1980s, flying her favorite route – the airline’s shuttle service between New York, Washington DC, and Boston. According to ABC News, Nash preferred working the short routes because it allowed her to return home every night to care for her handicapped son.
“It’s just been the perfect career path”
Times have certainly changed from when she first started flying. Nash recalled that passengers would buy life insurance from a vending machine before boarding. American would also regulate her when she was off-duty to make sure she was not living with a man, because flight attendants at the time were required to be single. Additionally, the airline weighed her before her shifts and threatened that she could be suspended if she gained too much weight.
“It used to be horrible. You put on a few pounds and you had to keep weighing yourself, and then if you stayed that way, they would take you off the payroll,” she explained in a 2017 interview with Arlington ABC affiliate WJLA.
Nash also mentioned that her early flights between New York and Washington only cost about $12 and cigarettes and matches would be passed out to passengers after the meal service.
“It’s just been the perfect career path,” she explained in 2022. “It’s given my love of people an outlet, and I like to think I’ve given good service to others.”
Setting the example
Guinness World Records recognized Nash two years ago as the world’s longest-serving flight attendant.

Byrnes stated that Nash’s legacy sets an example for the industry as a whole.
“With her quick wit, magnetic personality and passion for serving others, Bette set an example not just for the flight attendant profession but for all of us in the airline industry.”
Nash passed away on May 17th after being in hospice care due to breast cancer. According to ABC 7 News (KGO), she never officially retired from her role with American. She also regularly attended flight attendant training in compliance with rules and regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration.
“Bette was an industry icon, and those who flew with her knew her as a role model and consummate professional,” Byrnes and Wells said. “Fly high, Bette. You’ll be missed.”
