There are new promotions out today from both the American Airlines AAdvantage and the United Mileage Plus shopping portals. Each portal is offering 500 bonus miles for reaching a spend threshold within the next week; it’s $150 for United and $200 for American. These bonuses are in addition to the store-specific bonuses that you get when shopping through the portals.
It’s worth noting that American Airlines miles earned from the purchase itself (the payout shown for the specific store you choose) count as both redeemable miles and Loyalty Points, but the 500 mile portal bonus is redeemable miles only. You won’t receive 500 Loyalty Points.
If you hit the exact spending thresholds for these promotions, the American Airlines portal is giving an effective 2.5x bonus, while the United portal is giving a 3.33x bonus. The United shopping portal’s spending thresholds are easier to hit, not just because they’re lower, but also because you can hit that spend through in-store purchases at eligible retailers when paying with linked cards.
