While United was first globally last year, American now is, helped by 12 additions to its airport list.
Summary
- American will fly to 353 airports between May and December 2024, overtaking United’s 350.
- American’s network has been helped by 12 additional destinations compared to last year, including Brisbane, Copenhagen, Naples, and Nice.
- However, two airports that were served last year have been removed.
If international and domestic markets are combined, the three leading operators by the number of airports served are all in the US because of their vast countrywide operations. Examining what American has submitted to Cirium and OAG for May to December shows that the airline will fly to more airports with its own metal than any other carrier on a scheduled, regular basis.
United was number one last year, but Cirium and OAG indicate it will serve 350 airports in the examined period against American’s 353.
American’s served airports
The oneworld carrier’s airport portfolio includes those places served by the mainline operator and the regional unit American Eagle. Its 353-strong list reflects the situation as of May 14, and things may change, especially later in the year.

Breaking down its network reveals the following. Space reasons mean that a list of airports isn’t provided.
- US: 225 airports
- Caribbean: 42
- Mexico: 28
- Europe: 17
- South America: 15
- Central America: 10
- Canada: six
- Asia: five
- Australasia: three
- Middle East: two (assuming Tel Aviv returns as planned at the end of October)
Included are the many airports scheduled to return before December and places new to American’s network; more on those below.

What is new for 2024?
According to Cirium and OAG, American’s network between May and December 2023 comprised 343 airports – when United served more places. However, American has since introduced or reinstated 12 destinations, while San Andrés Island (last served in May 2023) and Samana (May 2023) have been cut, hence 353 airports this year.
The 12 additions are as follows in alphabetical order. Notice that 10 airports have not previously seen American (or American Eagle’s) frames, at least not in the past two decades.
- Brisbane: first time at the airport; Dallas/Fort Worth flights begin in October 2024
