Summary

  • American Airlines is the third-largest carrier for US-Europe flights this summer.
  • Philadelphia has 14 of the 51 routes, but its share has fallen compared to 2019.
  • In all, the carrier has four brand-new routes, together with resumptions that didn’t operate last year.

American Airlines is the third-largest carrier by non-stop US-Europe flights, behind United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. According to OAG data, American has 11% of flights on a 51-strong route network. However, there are six fewer routes and 2% fewer flights than in 2019. This article shows where it will be flying to Europe this summer. However, things may change, especially later in the season.

The top foreign airports are examined, too.

One route from each of these airports

The most recently commenced service was the return of American to Boston-London Heathrow in 2021. It previously served the airport pair until 2013, and the last few years saw it deploy the 757-200ER. Phoenix to London Heathrow began in March 2019.

  • Boston-London Heathrow: daily 777-200ER
  • Los Angeles-London Heathrow: triple daily 777-200ER, 777-300ER
  • Phoenix-London Heathrow: daily 777-200ER
  • Raleigh Durham-London Heathrow: daily 777-200ER

Four routes from Miami

Northern airlines, like American, will switch to summer schedules on March 31, 2024, and change to winter schedules on October 27. As such, winter-seasonal Paris CDG only just makes the cut.

  • Barcelona: daily 787-8
  • London Heathrow: double daily 777-200ER, 777-300ER
  • Madrid: daily 777-200ER, 787-9
  • Paris CDG: daily 777-200ER (back on October 25)

Where do you think American ranks?

Seven routes from these three hubs

Notice Chicago O’Hare-Venice. American inaugurated it in May 2018 and the summer-seasonal service operated until October 2019. It would have returned in 2020, but for the pandemic. It will now return in June. The other routes with ‘back on’ were served in 2022 or 2023 or both.

  • Charlotte-Dublin: daily 777-200ER
  • Charlotte-Frankfurt: daily 777-200ER

They are operated by a whopping 22 airlines, including American.

Eight routes from Dallas Fort Worth

Barcelona had its ‘unofficial’ and uncelebrated launch on February 23. If you think this was an odd time to begin the 5,195-mile (8,360 km) route, which revolves around summer demand, including for cruises, you’d be correct.

It only started due to the massive attendance at the World Mobile Congress. It will begin ‘properly’, hopefully amid much celebration, on April 4.

  • Amsterdam: daily 787-8 (back on May 6)
  • Barcelona: daily 787-9 (begins on April 4 and will only run until August 5)
  • Dublin: daily 777-200ER
  • Frankfurt: daily 777-200ER, 787-8
  • London Heathrow: four daily 777-200ER, 777-300ER
  • Madrid: daily 777-200ER, 787-9; double daily June 5-July 3
  • Paris CDG: daily 777-200ER, 787-8, 787-9; double daily June 5-July 9
  • Rome Fiumicino: daily 777-200ER, 787-8, 787-9; double daily May 5-September 3

Fourteen routes from Philadelphia

American’s East Coast hub of Philadelphia has oven a quarter of its European routes this summer. It has benefited from three brand-new links to Copenhagen, Naples, and Nice. However, in the summer of 2019, Philly services accounted for a third of American’s total. Its network has reduced from 19 routes, with the loss of Berlin, Bologna, Budapest, Dubrovnik, Edinburgh, Manchester, Prague, and Shannon.

  • Amsterdam: daily 787-8
  • Athens: daily 787-8 (back on May 6)
  • Barcelona: daily 787-8
  • Copenhagen: daily 787-9 (begins on June 6 and will run until October 5)
  • Dublin: daily 787-8 (787-9 from August)
  • Lisbon: daily 787-8 (787-9 from October)
  • London Heathrow: double daily 787-9
  • Madrid: daily 787-9
  • Naples: daily 787-8 (begins on June 5 and will run until October 25)
  • Nice: daily 787-9 (begins on May 6 and will run until October 5)
  • Paris CDG: daily 787-8
  • Rome Fiumicino: daily 787-8
  • Venice: daily 787-8 (back on April 4)
  • Zurich: daily 787-8
