British Airways BA520 departed London Heathrow at 10:00 BST to Funchal, the capital city of Portugal’s Madeira archipelago.
An Airbus A320 (registration G-TTNB) is operating the 3-hour flight to Madeira.
Pilots squawked 7700 (general emergency) after only 10 minutes after takeoff at 17,000 ft altitude.
