Summary
- Security breach: A man managed to fly from London to New York without a ticket or passport.
- Luck was on his side: The passenger found empty seats on a fully booked flight and behaved normally without raising any suspicion.
- Consequences: The man has been charged with various offenses, and the incident has sparked investigations into the negligence of airport staff.
A man with no flight ticket or traveling documents clears all airport security checkpoints, fools unsuspecting crew members, and flies all the way from London to New York City. As far-fetched as that sounds, even for a movie plot, that’s precisely what happened during the busy holiday period in December 2023.
London to New York with no ticket
In a major security breach, a passenger flew from London Heathrow Airport to New York JFK without a ticket or passport. As unbelievable as it sounds that someone could trick authorities at one of the world’s busiest airports, that’s what happened on December 23, 2023, during the busy Christmas holiday season.

According to reports, 46-year-old Craig Sturt managed to slip through airport security and various other crucial checkpoints by tailgating unsuspecting passengers. And somehow he managed to get inside the aircraft without anyone noticing that he was not carrying a ticket.
Flights during the holiday season are packed, and the British Airways Boeing 787 Dreamliner involved in this incident was also fully booked. But it seems that luck was on Sturt’s side at Heathrow because some passengers had missed that flight. Sturt conveniently sat in one of the empty seats and behaved normally during the transatlantic flight without raising any suspicion from the flight attendants.
Caught in JFK
Sturt’s luck ran out at New York JFK, where he resorted to the same technique of walking closely behind other passengers, hoping to fool authorities. He was asked to present his travel documents at the airport, failing which he was detained and deported back to London.

Sturt has been charged with various offenses, including obtaining services by deception and boarding an aircraft without permission. He was supposed to appear at a magistrate’s court in January but did not show up. He has now been declared a missing person and an investigation is underway.
Major security breach
It’s hard to imagine that something like this could happen at any airport, let alone London Heathrow. From the terminal gate to an aircraft seat, a passenger has to go through multiple checkpoints to ensure that nothing is amiss.
Sturt clearly took advantage of the travel rush during Christmas when airport workers and security officers have increased workloads. Still, for someone to cross multiple checkpoints without anyone noticing is a significant security breach. The Standard quotes a person close to the Home Office as saying,
“Heads will roll. It’s staggering this could happen. It doesn’t bear thinking about what might have happened if a terrorist had successfully boarded a flight undetected.
“This is a major embarrassment for Heathrow and Border Force, happening at our flagship airport. It’s not a great look for BA either – staff have simply been negligent and not done their jobs.”

Investigation Launched After Jetstar Passenger Boards Aircraft Without Ticket
The sneaky passenger said he left his ticket ‘outside.’
Hopefully, further investigation will identify the loopholes and the shortcomings that led to this incident so that something like this could be avoided in the future.
