British Airways has unveiled ambitious plans to transform every aspect of its business through a £7 billion transformation plan over the next two years. At its inaugural ‘In the Skies’ event in London, BA Chairman and CEO Sean Doyle outlined that the airline’s transformation involves upgrades across BA’s digital services, fleet, cabins, lounges, routes, and more. It marks one of the biggest overhauls in British Airways’ history as it looks to build stronger from the pandemic and provide a new standard of travel.
Overhaul of Digital Services
The multi-billion plan starts with a focus on upgrading British Airways’ digital services. BA has confirmed plans to overhaul its digital user experience with a new website and mobile app offering deeper personalisation. The new ba.com website is already in BETA testing with platforms designed to offer a range of new services, including empowering customers to self-serve if they wish, taking control of and making changes to their journeys online, rather than having to call one of the airline’s customer care centres to alter their plans. Initial changes will start to roll out by the end of the year. According to Doyle, updating the airline’s online and mobile offerings will improve the customer experience and bring BA’s digital services up to date. The changes aim to give customers more flexibility and control over their travel arrangements online.
British Airways heavily emphasises upgrading its customer experience as part of the multi-billion pound transformation plan. Several new initiatives are being introduced to modernise and improve how customers interact with and are serviced by the airline. In addition to overhauling the BA website and app, the airline invests in new technologies like AI and machine learning to enhance operations and ensure better on-time performance. This will help minimise disruptions that can negatively impact customers. BA is also creating hundreds of new roles at Heathrow specifically to improve the airport experience for travellers.
Connectivity is another area of focus. Free onboard messaging for Executive Club members using the aircraft WiFi will allow customers to stay connected inflight. The new customer care solution jointly developed with Microsoft empowers cabin crews to assist customers and resolve real-time issues. Looking ahead, BA plans to bring a new concept to its lounge spaces by redeveloping the Dubai lounge. Refurbishments are also planned for other lounges globally. Customers can also look forward to new cabin interiors and short-haul seats offering modern comfort.
Fleet and Cabin Changes
As part of its £7 billion transformation plan, British Airways is making significant changes and improvements to its fleet and cabins. Over the next two years, BA will introduce brand-new short-haul seating and interiors to the new Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft set to arrive in May 20224. Customers can expect modern and comfortable Euro Traveller and Club Europe seats with extra storage and power ports.
Long-haul travellers will also benefit from fleet and cabin upgrades. A new flagship First Suite is under development, with plans to debut on the airline’s A380s in late 2025. This luxury cabin product will provide BA’s most valuable customers with an exclusive flying experience. In addition, BA continues to expand its global network, with new routes to Abu Dhabi, Agadir, Izmir, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur announced. The new routes announced include:
- Abu Dhabi, returning on April 20
- Agadir, Morocco, starting March 31
- Izmir, Turkey, launching May 18
- Bangkok, Thailand, returning in October with 3 flights per week from London Gatwick.
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, returning in November with daily flights from London Heathrow.
