Five of Europe’s leading airlines—Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Air France, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines—have announced a major new partnership. The collaboration, named the ‘European Sky Alliance’, is designed to create a more integrated and seamless travel experience for passengers throughout Europe and globally.
The historic announcement was made during a joint press conference at the Brussels headquarters of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). CEOs from all five participating airlines were in attendance to introduce the new alliance.
### A Unified European Travel Network
The European Sky Alliance aims to significantly enhance passenger convenience by integrating the airlines’ extensive networks. Key features of the partnership include a unified booking system, which will allow travelers to plan and book complex itineraries across the five carriers in a single transaction. Flight schedules will also be synchronized to improve connections and reduce layover times.
Furthermore, the alliance will feature reciprocal frequent flyer benefits, enabling members of each airline’s loyalty program to earn and redeem miles or points across the entire network. A unified mobile application is also in development to provide a central point for managing travel, from booking to boarding. Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa, stated that the alliance is “not just about connecting flights; it’s about connecting cultures, economies, and people.”
### Commitment to a Sustainable Future
A core objective of the European Sky Alliance is to advance sustainability in the aviation industry. The member airlines have pledged to make significant joint investments in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and to collaborate on developing innovative technologies aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of their combined operations.
The formation and operation of the European Sky Alliance are currently pending regulatory approval from the relevant European and national authorities. The airlines are working with these bodies to ensure the partnership complies with all competition laws and regulations before its official launch.
