In a landmark deal, the National Basketball Association (NBA) has inked a multiyear partnership with Emirates airline. The deal includes the title sponsorship of the NBA’s in-season tournament, which will now be known as the Emirates NBA Cup. This is the first instance of the in-season tournament receiving a branded name, adding a new dimension to the championship since its inception, when the trophy was simply known as the NBA Cup.
A New Era of Sponsorship
Under the agreement, the Emirates logo will be prominently featured on the jerseys of referees across various NBA leagues. The logo will make its debut on NBA referee jerseys during the All-Star Game on February 18 in Indianapolis. The G League will follow suit in the 2024-25 season, and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) will introduce the logo in the 2025 season. This move symbolizes the growing synergy between sports and aviation industries.
Emirates and Sports Sponsorship
Emirates Group Chairman and Chief Executive, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, views this partnership as a strategic endeavor to engage with the NBA’s extensive global audience, particularly in the United States. Emirates has a rich history of sports sponsorships, including associations with football clubs Real Madrid, AC Milan, Arsenal, and tennis’s U.S. Open, among others. The NBA deal signifies the airline’s commitment to promoting sports globally.
More Than Just a Name
The partnership extends beyond mere brand visibility. It encompasses significant league events such as NBA Crossover and the NBA Finals Legacy Project, a program focusing on educational investment in the communities of the teams reaching the finals. Furthermore, the deal includes virtual branding in arenas and inflight NBA content on Emirates flights. The inflight content will feature player profiles and interviews, aimed at introducing NBA to Emirates’ passengers worldwide, thereby promoting the sport on a global scale.
