The goal is to provide a "walk-through" experience, minimizing the need for physical documents and manual checks. One of the immediate targets for this rollout is the introduction of biometric check-in for Emirates Skywards First and Business Class passengers, which is slated for the first quarter of 2019. The 18-24 month timeframe indicates a phased and comprehensive implementation across the terminal.
This technological upgrade is a key component of Dubai’s broader “SmartGates” initiative, which seeks to modernize airport operations and passenger services. With DXB handling a substantial volume of passengers—approximately 30,000 to 35,000 per hour during peak periods and over 90 million in 2018—the biometric system is crucial for managing this scale efficiently.
