This Lunar New Year, flydubai spreads its wings to the vibrant tourist hotspots of Malaysia – Penang and Langkawi. As the first airline to establish a connection between Dubai and these destinations, flydubai commenced daily flights from Dubai International Airport, signaling a significant expansion of its network in Southeast Asia.
Expanding Horizons: flydubai’s Foray into Malaysia
Launched during the auspicious Chinese New Year festival, flydubai’s new routes to Penang and Langkawi mark a milestone in the airline’s growth. Sudhir Sreedharan, Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations at flydubai, expressed his enthusiasm for the expansion, emphasizing the potential for increased tourism and cultural exchange between the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
With daily flights now operating, passengers can look forward to exploring the rich tapestry of Malaysian culture, history, and natural beauty. From the bustling streets of Penang to the serene beaches of Langkawi, these destinations offer unique experiences that will captivate the hearts of travelers.
A Fading Legacy: The Struggle to Preserve Jikey Folk Theatre
As Malaysia welcomes an influx of tourists, a centuries-old tradition in Langkawi, Kedah, faces the threat of extinction. Jikey, a traditional folk theatre with roots dating back over 200 years, is clinging to survival, with only two elders remaining who possess extensive knowledge and experience of the art form: Pak Chahor and Pak Jusoh.
Both men began their Jikey journey at the tender age of 12, dedicating their lives to preserving this important cultural heritage. The theatre form is a delightful blend of slapstick comedy, masks, live traditional music, and a Malaysian opening sequence featuring five distinct roles.
Reviving the Past: Efforts to Train the Next Generation
Recognizing the urgent need to preserve Jikey, efforts are underway to create a training program for young people interested in learning the various styles of this captivating performance art. By passing on the knowledge and skills of Pak Chahor and Pak Jusoh, it is hoped that Jikey will continue to thrive and enchant audiences for generations to come.
As flydubai connects the world with new destinations, it also opens doors to the discovery of diverse cultures and the preservation of ancient traditions. In this spirit, the airline’s expansion to Penang and Langkawi not only signifies growth but also highlights the importance of celebrating and safeguarding the rich tapestry of human heritage.
Today, on February 14, 2024, we embark on a journey of exploration and understanding, delving into the heart of Malaysian culture and working together to preserve its most cherished treasures.
