JetBlue Passenger Films Rain-Like Mist Inside Plane Cabin, Claims She Was ‘Soaking Wet and Cold’ During Flight

A spokesperson for the airline says the condensation is ‘common’ and not a cause for concern in a statement to PEOPLE

Last week, real estate agent Savannah Gowarty recorded some curious conditions on her JetBlue flight to New York.

In her now-viral TikTok video — which has amassed over 7 million views on the app — clouds of mist appeared to roll through the aisle as passengers boarded the aircraft.

The TikToker claimed the pilot announced, “It appears to be raining in the cabin” during the foggy phenomenon.

Gowarty’s hair and skin looked damp as she told the camera she was “so cold” once she was seated. She also folded her shirt over the side of her seat, writing, “Hoping this will air dry on my arm rest,” in overlaying text.

“Nothing better than being on a 4hr flight back to new york soaking wet and cold,” Gowarty added in her video’s caption.

TikTok users voiced their shock and confusion about the pre-flight occurrence in the video’s comment section, but the airline says the conditions are nothing to worry about.

“The condensation or mist is common, especially in humid climates, and does not cause wetness inside the aircraft,” JetBlue spokesman Derek Dombrowski tells PEOPLE in a statement. “We believe the customers were wet due to heavy rain that occurred as they were boarding via an outside ramp and stairs.”

In August 2019, travelers experienced a similar case of condensation on a Delta flight also headed for New York. But while Gowarty’s video captured a relatively light mist, passengers described the earlier instance as an extremely dense fog.

“I have never seen it that thick before,” Alan Yurman, a retired national transportation safety board investigator, told CNN at the time.

Regardless of the disconcerting clouds, Delta issued a statement to PEOPLE similar to JetBlue’s recent explanation five years later, clarifying that the fog was no cause for alarm.

However, passengers on the 2019 Delta flight claimed that the airline staff did little to reassure them about the overhead clouds during the 30 minutes they waited on the tarmac before takeoff.

“The flight attendants didn’t really make an announcement, they just said that they were practicing for their Halloween haunted house, and kind of made a joke of it instead of saying like it was from the humidity or condensation,” passenger Amanda Goncalves told CNN of the disturbance in 2019.

In-flight irregularities continue to make headlines regularly. In March 2024, United Airlines emphasized its emphasis on safety after a series of five incidents occurred within one week. Some resulted in passengers and crew members having to undergo emergency evacuations.

“Safety is our highest priority and is at the center of everything we do,” United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said in a statement to PEOPLE earlier this year.

His statement continued, “Unfortunately, in the past few weeks, our airline has experienced a number of incidents that are reminders of the importance of safety. While they are all unrelated, I want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus.”
