In his first interview since becoming CEO in November 2023, Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer told CNBC that the airline is about three-quarters of the way to finishing its first-class cabin, which it expects to be a high-yielding product for the carrier.
“Based on the demand from certain sectors, we see a high demand for First Class, and as such, have decided to introduce a newly-designed First Class cabin unique to Qatar Airways,” he stated.
“No one can develop a First Class cabin better than us – we are combining the experience of flying commercial and executive jets to develop something new. We are 70 to 80 per cent ready and are only finalising colours. We are hoping to announce it soon.”
The Qatar Airways boss didn’t identify which routes will have access to the new first-class cabins, which will be rolled out across some of its fleet. But if its business class Qsuites are anything to go by, first flyers can expect something special from the Doha-based airline.
Speaking of, Badr Al-Meer said the redesigned Qsuite would be revealed at the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2024. The product made its debut in 2017.
During the interview, the CEO outlined his plans for the airline and its group of businesses, which will be underpinned by a focus on innovation.
This applies to digital innovation to improve overall operations, new routes in growth markets including China and India to solidify its standing as a global gateway and other programmes to benefit both passengers and the airline’s global 60,000-strong workforce.
One such innovation was the launch of the new Privilege Club Collection that allows all loyalty program members to use their Avios points and bid on exclusive experiences sponsored by Qatar Airways.
The Middle Eastern airline also recently gave its cabin crew a digital facelift, equipping crew with a tool granting real-time insights into flights and passengers.
He also touched on the overall positive outlook for the airline and group, whilst welcoming the challenge of competing with existing and new GCC airlines like Riyadh Air, which ultimately helps raise the bar when it comes to customer experience.
