The pilot of a Boeing 737 Max involved in a worrying incident reported that the brakes began to shake “violently” as they attempted to slow down on the runway before the plane skidded off the tarmac.
An initial report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that the pilot had turned off the autobrakes on the Boeing 737 Max before landing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. According to the report, the co-pilot of the United Airlines flight believed the runway looked wet, while the pilot thought it was dry.
The crew reportedly felt the “touchdown was uneventful” and carried out “at an appropriate speed, and within the touchdown zone.”
The NTSB stated that the captain “did not ‘slow too much initially’ because the runway appeared dry, he wanted to expedite their time on the runway, and because he preferred decelerating gradually for passenger comfort.”
