Regional jets will not be fully phased out. There are way to many markets that can’t take mainline jets. What I do see happening are to places where they can land the bigger jets would be to reduce frequency when possible and upgrade to mainline. But this risks creating connection issues such as long layovers or too tight connections.
Delta has already started this by using the A220 platform, something United hasn’t obtained yet.
