Weather Balloon Suspected in Mid-Air Collision with United Airlines Plane
A United Airlines flight experienced a mid-air collision with what is believed to be a weather balloon. The incident occurred on Tuesday, involving a Boeing 737 aircraft carrying 152 passengers and five crew members.
The flight, United Airlines flight 304 from San Francisco to San Diego, was reportedly cruising at approximately 37,000 feet when the collision took place. Following the incident, the pilots made the decision to divert the flight to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Upon landing in Los Angeles, the aircraft was inspected. Initial findings from the inspection revealed damage to the nose of the plane, consistent with striking an object of a certain size.
While authorities are investigating, preliminary assessments point to a weather balloon as the most probable cause of the mid-air encounter. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been notified and will be involved in the investigation.
The safety of the passengers and crew was paramount, and the pilots’ decision to divert to LAX ensured a safe landing despite the in-flight event. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew as a result of the collision or the subsequent emergency landing.
Further investigation will determine the exact nature and origin of the object that collided with the aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also expected to be involved in the inquiry.
