Engine troubles: Wizz Air temporarily cancels Luxembourg flight routes

Wizz Air joined Luxembourg Airport in June 2023, starting to offer Flights between Luxembourg to Bucharest, Rome and Skopje from last June, July and November respectively. The addition of Wizz Air, specifically their Luxembourg to Rome route, directly competed with national carrier Luxair.

Having already announced their intention to undergo maintenance of their aircrafts in late 2023, Wizz Air recognized that 25% of their fleet would be affected – specifically the A320 and A321 models.

According to the Luxembourg Airport, Wizz Air is known for operating with the lowest carbon emissions per passenger/km against other competiting airlines in Europe. Part of that is thanks to its new aircrafts that use the latest A321neo  technology. Airbus states that this technology brings more than 20% fuel savings and CO2 reduction compared to older single-aisle aircrafts. Unfortunately, its these very aircrafts (as well as others) that need to undergo maintenance work.

A320 and A321 models will be checked to protect the safety of passengers in the face of a potential metal powder issue with Pratt & Whitney engines causing early damage to turbines – an issue that other airlines have also experienced.
