On 14 May 2024, European ultra-low-cost carrier Wizz Air announced the launch of a new summer leisure route connecting its operating base at London Gatwick Airport (LGW) to Varna Airport (VAR) in Bulgaria. The service will be seasonal and will allow London residents an efficient nonstop connection to the popular resort city on the Black Sea.

The ultra-low-cost airline is the only one to directly connect London and Varna, the third-largest city in Bulgaria, with nonstop flights, and further demonstrates the carrier’s longstanding commitment to offering travelers affordable access to off-the-beaten-track destinations. On this route, for example, fares are set to start as low as £26.99.
A new opportunity for travelers
The city of Varna, Bulgaria, is among Europe’s hidden gems for tourists, offering a unique combination of port, naval base, and seaside resort that offers dozens of attractions for a UK holiday-goer. Furthermore, with the warm summer months approaching, the city can make an ideal seaside getaway for those traveling on a budget.
The city features a 32 kilometer-long coastline with more than 22 beaches, all of which are located along the picturesque Black Sea. Those with a passion for history will also enjoy the city’s Archaeological Museum and Roman Thermal Baths, which are the fourth-largest in existence in Europe. Furthermore, Varna’s Primorski Park offers dozens of lovely outdoor spaces for travelers to relax.

This summer, the airline will be operating flights from Gatwick three times weekly on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, a schedule ideal for both weekend getaways and longer stays. Passengers will also be able to access Wizz Air’s recently-launched personalized shopping platform, which leverages AI technologies to provide individualized recommendations to shoppers based off of their destinations.
An exciting announcement
This new service will allow Wizz Air to more effectively connect the entire London area with this up-and-coming destination on the Black Sea. Luton Airport is convenient for those in North London, but can be quite a trek from many of the city’s southern boroughs. As a result, London Gatwick’s new flights will offer a new convenient alternative for travelers from South London, as well as in the surrounding counties.

It is unsurprising that Wizz Air’s leadership team is excited to announce this new route. In a statement made to Simple Flying via email, the airline had the following words to share:
“
We are pleased to announce the new route from London Gatwick to Varna, making it easier for travellers to explore the city this summer, while also connecting families between the UK and Bulgaria.”
The carrier would go on to add Varna’s value as an alternative destination, offering a unique traveler experience for travelers of all kinds. All Wizz Air flights are operated by aircraft from the A320 family, which are equipped with between 180 and 239 seats, depending on the specific model.
