Wizz Air reports its lowest ever annual carbon emissions result

European ultra-low cost carrier Wizz Air reports that its average carbon emissions for 2023 amounted to 51.5 grams per passenger/km – a 6.8% reduction compared to 2022.

This figure represents the airline’s lowest ever average annual carbon intensity result recorded in one calendar year.

2023 Performance

The numbers tell a compelling story, with the airline reporting an average carbon emission of 51.5 grams per passenger/km in 2023—a remarkable 6.8% reduction from the previous year, neatly underlining its industry commitment to CO2 intensity reduction.

February 2023 marked a further milestone for Wizz Air as it achieved its lowest reported carbon emissions per passenger/km for a single month—48.9 grams, an impressive 8.3% reduction compared to February 2022.

This not only underscores the airline’s dedication to continuous improvement but also positions it as a frontrunner in sustainable air travel.

25% Reduction by 2030

Looking ahead, Wizz Air has set an ambitious goal to further reduce its CO2 intensity by 25% by the year 2030. At the core of this sustainability pledge lies the strategic renewal of its fleet.

In 2023, Wizz Air took a giant leap forward by adding 32 of the newest and most eco-friendly Airbus A321neo aircraft to its arsenal, further positioning itself with the uptake of leading edge aviation technology.

Fleet Renewal & Sustainability

Currently operating 195 Airbus aircraft with an average age of 4.3 years—well below the European aviation industry average—Wizz Air is reshaping the industry standard.

The commitment to fleet renewal not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes significantly to reducing the carbon footprint associated with aging aircraft, a commendable feat in the pursuit of sustainability.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiatives

Wizz Air’s sustainability initiative extends beyond its fleet strategy. In 2023, the airline joined forces with two sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producers—Neste and Cepsa.

A proactive step towards greener skies, Wizz Air made a £5 million equity investment in Firefly Green Fuels, a UK biofuel company, and participated in a US$50 million investment in CleanJoule, a US-based SAF startup.

In May 2023, the airline achieved another milestone by becoming the first in Hungary to commercially test SAF supply, operating flights from Budapest airport with a 35% SAF blend.

Fully Electric Turnarounds

Wizz Air’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint also extends to ground operations. In 2023, the airline initiated fully electric turnarounds in collaboration with Aviation Services at Rome Fiumicino airport and Menzies Aviation at Budapest Airport.

This initiative aims to slash CO2 emissions from ground handling processes by an impressive 80-85%, showcasing Wizz Air’s determination to lead the charge in transforming aviation practices for a sustainable future.
