European ultra-low cost carrier Wizz Air has revealed its performance figures for 2023, showing that it transported 60.3 million people across the calendar year.
This marks the highest ever yearly passenger traffic numbers for the airline, and represents a 32% increase compared to 2022.
In 2023, Wizz Air launched nearly a hundred new routes, took delivery of 32 brand new Airbus A321neo aircraft and flew 263 million kilometres combined.
2023 was a banner year for the major European carrier, and saw significant returns in expansion and growth.
Wizz Air’s commitment to network expansion was evident with the introduction of nearly a hundred new routes in 2023.
The airline also welcomed 32 advanced Airbus A321neo aircraft into its fleet, covering an impressive 263 million kilometers combined.
This overall expansion not only served to solidify Wizz Air’s position in the European market, but also offered passengers a broader array of travel options.
One of Wizz Air’s standout achievements in 2023 was the completion of 99.31% of its scheduled flights, securing the third-best position among all European airlines.
Notably, the airline ranked in the top three for flights operated precisely on time, surpassing industry averages and reinforcing its commitment to reliability.
Wizz Air’s capacity saw a remarkable 23% increase in 2023, accompanied by the introduction of over 10 new routes from the UK.
Operating from seven airports, including two bases at London Luton and London Gatwick, the airline executed over 59,000 flights – an 11% surge from the previous year. This growth not only amplified the airline’s reach but also improved overall operational performance.
In its pursuit of environmental sustainability, Wizz Air achieved notable milestones in 2023. The airline completed its first fully electric turnarounds in Rome and Budapest, underscoring its commitment to eco-friendly practices.
Additionally, the airline invested £5 million in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) research and development, aligning with its goal to utilize SAF in its UK operations from 2028.
Wizz Air’s engagement with the community extended beyond aviation, as the airline sponsored its inaugural running event in the UK – the Wizz Air Hackney Half.
This partnership, set to continue in 2024, reflects the carrier’s dedication to fostering connections and creating memorable experiences beyond the confines of air travel.
As Wizz Air’s Corporate Communication Manager, Zsuzsa Trubek, aptly puts it, “We are proud to have finished 2023 with record passenger numbers, an ever-evolving network, advanced fleet, and enhanced operational performance.”
With the UK being a pivotal market, the carrier is poised for further investments in 2024, marking 20 years of affordable travel.
