Flights to and from Luxembourg operated by the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air have been temporarily suspended, with connections to Skopje, Bucharest and Rome unavailable for booking for the next few weeks.
“We have indeed had to temporarily suspend all flights to and from Luxembourg,” Yves Panneels, Head of Press Relations at the airline confirmed.
Engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney is planning to overhaul the engines of the new Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft in the coming months. Wizz Air had already announced at the end of 2023 that some of its aircraft would undergo this maintenance in the course of 2024.
Safety first
“The maintenance work affects several routes,” explained the Wizz Air press spokesperson. A quarter of the Hungarian airline’s fleet will remain grounded. A bitter blow for the low-cost airline, which has recorded double-digit growth rates in recent months.
European airlines prepare for record summer passenger numbers
“No serious problem has been identified, but safety must be our top priority,” said Panneels. “We are trying to minimise the inconvenience for passengers as much as possible,” he added.
According to airline trade press reports a metal powder defect is causing premature wear on the turbines.
It is not yet clear when the connections to the three European cities will resume. “It is difficult to say when these checks will be completed.” According to the French economic and financial newspaper Les Echos, it could take up to 300 days.
“All affected customers have been informed,” said Panneels. Passengers who have already purchased tickets have several options. “You can either book another flight, get a 100% refund of the ticket price or benefit from a 120% credit from Wizz Air.”
