Starting from October 1, China will permit foreign global distribution systems (GDSs) to assist Chinese travel agents in issuing tickets for international flights. Until now, Chinese travel agents had to use TravelSky, a state-run GDS only. Further, foreign airlines may now distribute their airfares to Chinese travel agents via GDSs. However, China’s domestic airlines will not have the same opportunity concerning computerized reservation systemss. The Civil Aviation Administration of China announced these new regulations earlier this week. While most of China’s travel agents in larger cities have fully computerized, outside these areas they still predominantly use paper to process transactions.
