Hawaii Marriott Hotels, Union Reach Accord to End Strike

Unite Here Local 5 members in Hawaii voted overwhelmingly yesterday to ratify a contract for 2,700 workers at five Maui and Waikiki hotels operated by Marriott, ending a strike that started Oct. 8. The properties are the Sheraton Waikiki, Royal Hawaiian, Westin Moana Surfrider, Sheraton Princess Waikiki, and Sheraton Maui.

Collective bargaining agreements at a total of 20 Unite Here Local 5 properties expired at the end of June. According to USA Today, the strike was the longest in the union’s history.

During the strike, picketers carried signs with the slogan “One job should be enough.” Job security is a key element of the new contract, the union said.
