SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — It was in July that South Euclid City Council passed legislation to regulate short-term rental properties. That law was on the books for only a short time when, on Dec. 1, police were called to a Felton Road home being used as an Airbnb property, where multiple people had been shot.
In that incident, which took place in the 1500 block of Felton Road, 17- and 21-year-old residents of Cleveland, and a Euclid man, 20, were shot and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Mayor Georgine Welo and City Council took notice and, in council’s first meeting since the incident took place, approved a six-month moratorium on the granting of building permits or certificates of occupancy for buildings used for short-term rental purposes.
“I think we need to look at this,” Welo told council while advocating for the moratorium. ”As we all know, sadly, we had an incident in our community, like so many others have, and we’re lucky that nobody was killed.
