We all know that Airbnbs have gotten way too expensive in recent years, and it’s worth noting that fees actually end up adding a huge part of that uptick in overall costs — especially here in the US.
With that in mind, the folks at NetCredit examined more than 60,000 listings, spread across 275 touristy areas, and put together some handy graphics showing a comparison of fee percentages for five-day stays in similar housing locations around the world. There’s even more granular info available from them on other continents, but we’ll focus in on the North American and global data today.
Key findings:
-
In North America, Airbnbs in Detroit, Michigan have the highest average fees — making up a whopping 33.99 percent of the total cost. Phoenix, Arizona and Austin, Texas are right behind with 27.09 percent and 26.84 percent, respectively.
-
On the flip side, Latin American cities in North America dominate the list of lowest fees. Havana, Cuba typically only has a 15.47 percent fee, while Guatemala City, Guatemala and Cancún, Mexico come close with 15.58 percent and 16.38 percent each.
-
On the global and least-expensive stage, Lahore, Pakistan wins out with just 4.17 percent in fees. Vanuatu and Santorini, Greece are the next-best options, with fees around 9.81 percent and 9.99 percent, respectively.
-
The US crushes the competition for worst fees around the world — taking up 16 of the top 20 spots. Canada has two high-fee cities in the mix while France and Australia have one city each.
