In lieu of numerous anti-tourism protests spanning across Italy’s countryside over the last two years, the Italian government has moved full steam ahead with enforcing regulations on the key lock boxes used by many short-term holiday rentals such as Airbnb.
A new law has been put into place banning Airbnb self-check-ins across Italy in a move to put a stop to the overwhelming number of tourists that have converged upon the country since the pandemic, but most importantly, to prevent terrorism, according to Italy’s Interior Ministry.
Going forward, guests who have made reservations with booking platforms such as Booking.com, Expedia, VRBO, or Airbnb must take possession of the short-term rental keys in person from the owner of the property: the little black key boxes that normally contain the keys to the accommodations will no longer be permitted.
