Short-term rentals via the Airbnb booking platform make a significant contribution to Switzerland’s economic output. However, they have little impact on the housing shortage in cities, according to a new report by the company.
Airbnb recorded over two million guest arrivals in Switzerland in 2024, as the company announced on Tuesday. In total, the approximately 30,000 hosts earned over 375 million francs. The added value from this amounts to over one billion francs, Airbnb calculated. This supports around 10,000 jobs – particularly in the hospitality industry.
At the same time, the company, which was founded in 2007, noted that so-called commercial rentals would only take up a minimal share of the housing market. In Geneva, Zurich, Bern and Basel, accommodation offered on Airbnb for more than 90 days…
