ASHEVILLE – On Feb. 20, the city of Asheville placed a bright white sign on the door of the condo building at 17 N. Market St., stating in blocky, black letters that the building had been subject to a “Zoning Decision.”
For local policy makers, the decision was disappointing and frustrating. For the residents of the building, it was indicative of a loophole around Asheville’s short-term rental laws that is “so large you could drive a truck through it.”
City of Asheville staff have determined that the developers of 17 N. Market St. can reapply to convert the building’s use type to “lodging” seven years after the city approved the project. Feb. 24, 2025.
