(WJAR) — It’s a hotel hack that’s costing customers thousands.
Customers who made hotel reservations through Booking.com are being duped into sending scammers what they think are payments for their upcoming stay.
Instead, their credit cards are getting drained before they can even pack their bags!
But Bentley University Professor and creator of scamicide.com Steve Weisman says the scam isn’t Booking.com’s fault.
“I just recently had some Scamicide readers contact me because they fell prey to this,” explained Weisman.
He said victims make hotel reservations through Booking.com. Scammers then contact the victims from an email that looks like it’s coming from the hotel, indicating the victim needs to make a payment.
“So what happened is the Booking.com account of particular hotels, hundreds of them so far, have been corrupted – those have been taken over by the scammers,” said Weisman. “So what happens is you make a reservation with a particular hotel, you get it through…
