The inaugural India Travel and Tourism Sustainability Conclave, jointly hosted by the MakeMyTrip Foundation and World Travel and Tourism Council India Initiative (WTTCII), took place in New Delhi on April 16. The day-long event convened over 30 key representatives from government, industry, and civil society to create a unified approach towards sustainable development within the country’s travel and tourism sector.
Opened by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, it featured discussions on five themes including hospitality, aviation, mobility, climate action, and responsible tourism.
Asserting that the idea of sustainability is embedded in Indian ethos, Shekhawat said there is a need to create “success stories” on sustainability in the tourism sector and replicate them across the country. In his keynote address, Shekhawat added that all stakeholders of the sector must work with a “collective vision” to achieve sustainability in the truest sense.
