Bangladesh and Thailand are set to launch direct flight operations soon, a move aimed at boosting bilateral trade, tourism, and strengthening overall relations between the two nations. This initiative will see Biman Bangladesh Airlines resume its direct flights to Bangkok, a service it last operated in 2015. The previous direct flight service by Biman had ceased approximately 15 years ago.
The decision follows recent discussions and the signing of a relevant document in October last year. Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Thailand, Md. Nazmul Huda, recently held meetings with key officials from Thai Airways International and the Tourism Authority of Thailand to finalize the arrangements. During these discussions, the Ambassador emphasized the significant number of Bangladeshi expatriates residing in Thailand and Thai nationals visiting Bangladesh, highlighting the critical need for direct air connectivity.
Currently, an estimated 85,000 to 90,000 Bangladeshis visit Thailand annually, while approximately 100,000 Thai nationals visit Bangladesh each year. The Ambassador also noted that around 125 Bangladeshi expatriates are working in Thailand. The reintroduction of direct flights is expected to significantly ease travel for these groups and for tourists, thereby further enhancing economic and cultural ties between Dhaka and Bangkok.
