Anitta joins Madonna
Madonna performed some of her greatest hits, including ‘Nothing Really Matters’, ‘Like a Prayer’ and ‘Vogue’. Brazilian singer Anitta also joined her on stage at one point in time. But hours before the pop superstar arrived, fans danced along to Madonna’s songs played from speakers on the stage.
Giant screens were put along the Copacabana beach so that the largely Brazilian crowd could see the event unfold. Some watched from apartments or hotels, others joined the crowd from boats. The excitement was built ahead of the concert with T-shirts, souvenirs, billboards with Madonna’s face appearing everywhere on the beach.
Earlier events at Copacabana
Earlier in 2006, the ‘Rolling Stones’ performed at the Copacabana beach to 1.2 million fans. Rod Stewart gave the biggest free rock concert in history there in 1994, attended by 4 million people. Madonna’s previous largest live concert crowd was attended by 130,000 fans in Paris in 1987.
Milestone spectacle
According to the ‘New York Times’, days of Madonna-mania in the city came to its extreme. Her songs spilled out of stores and car stereos, fans gathered outside her hotel and shouted her name.
