In a landmark initiative to revive and bolster its tourism sector, Cambodia is poised to host the first-ever ASEAN Top Table Sales business matching event, aiming to draw a greater influx of foreign tourists through regional collaboration. Scheduled from March 14-16, this pioneering event will spotlight Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, featuring 30 outbound tour companies and a plethora of ASEAN tour operators.
Thourn Sinan, chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Cambodia chapter, highlighted the event’s dual objectives: to enhance regional promotional efforts and to attract more tourists, especially from Europe. “This rotational event among ASEAN countries serves as a platform for local tour operators to showcase their products and forge partnerships, thus driving tourist arrivals,” Sinan elaborated. Meth Socheat, owner of Wing Premium Travel and Tours, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the cost-effectiveness and direct engagement opportunities offered by the event compared to overseas marketing efforts.
Cambodia’s tourism sector witnessed a significant resurgence in 2023, welcoming over 5.4 million foreign tourists, predominantly from Asia. This marked a 139.5% increase from the previous year, contributing substantially to the national economy. Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Laos emerged as the top countries of origin, with tourists from these nations constituting nearly 69% of all foreign visitors. The Ministry of Tourism’s official data further revealed notable arrivals from the US, South Korea, Indonesia, France, the UK, and Malaysia.
Cambodia’s efforts to promote its rich cultural heritage received global acclaim, as it was named Asia’s Leading Cultural Destination by the World Travel Awards in 2023. This accolade, coupled with the predicted increase in tourist numbers, underscores the significant potential of the tourism industry as a key economic driver. The Ministry of Tourism’s proactive approach to hosting events and forming partnerships is aimed at reaching pre-pandemic tourism levels, with a focus on sustainable and authentic travel experiences.
