A landmark meeting between a representative from the Royal Caribbean Group, a U.S-based cruise liner behemoth, and a senior official from Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism signifies a promising surge for the Kingdom’s tourism industry. The meeting, a significant stride towards exploring potential avenues for tourism growth, unfolded on February 2, 2024.
Exploring New Horizons for Tourism
The meeting’s participants included Joni Gevriye, the representative of Royal Caribbean, and Chuob Ratana, the Director of the Ministry’s Department of Tourism Development Planning. The primary agenda of this high-profile dialogue was to consider the inclusion of Cambodia, specifically the Preah Sihanouk province, in Royal Caribbean’s cruise liner itineraries.
Decoding the Logistics
Before Royal Caribbean, the world’s third-largest cruise liner company, can include Cambodia in their package tours, they need to undertake comprehensive studies. These stringent reviews will encompass technical inspections of docking facilities and evaluations of both immigration and customs regulations. Once these meticulous studies are carried out, the reports will be submitted to the cruise liner’s central office for further consideration.
Anticipating a Rising Star
Ratana expressed optimism in the aftermath of the meeting. This optimism is fueled by the Cambodian government’s ambitious plans to transform Preah Sihanouk into a Model Multi-purpose Special Economic Zone. The vision is to elevate the province to the status of a ‘rising star’ in the region. The potential partnership between Royal Caribbean and Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism could immensely contribute to realizing this vision.
The prospects of this partnership have also been hailed by Thourn Sinan, the chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Cambodia chapter.
