The Beijing government has increased the duty-free shopping allowance from mainland Chinese to 15,000 yuan ($2,100) per visit for tourists to Hong Kong and Macau. This measure will take effect on July 1 at six border crossings. The Hong Kong Government has estimated that this decision could raise tourist spending in the city by HK$8.8 billion to HK$17.6 billion a year, adding between HK$2.7 billion and HK$5.4 billion to their economy. The increase in allowance has been agreed upon by the central government and authorities in Macau and Hong Kong.
