The expansion of a solo travel scheme in Hong Kong is expected to bring about 300,000 extra visitors and up to HK$1.5 billion (US$192 million) in spending, the city leader has said, describing those from the newly added eight mainland Chinese cities as “high spenders”.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu on Tuesday also revealed that airlines have plans to increase flights to some of the cities, while the Tourism Board will distribute HK$200 vouchers to travellers from those cities applying to visit Hong Kong via the Individual Visit Scheme from May 27.
Lee told media before his weekly meeting with the Executive Council that the cities, all provincial and regional capitals with large populations and rapid economic growth, “were high-consumption cluster cities”.
