Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung said on Thursday that authorities will continue to engage with Chinese officials over plans to extend the mainland individual traveler’s scheme to include more Chinese cities in attempts to boost local tourism.
Speaking at Legco, Yeung said the SAR government will continue exploring with its mainland counterparts measures that can facilitate mainland tourists in visiting Hong Kong, including expanding the mainland individual traveler’s scheme and increasing the duty-free allowance for mainland visitors.
He said the government has been actively diversifying the city’s portfolio of visitor source markets and attracting high value-added overnight visitors.
He said the mainland remains the primary source of visitors, accounting for 80 percent of the total visitor volume, which plays a crucial role in the tourist industry.
